NewMoon Phase Prints

The moon from your night.

Personalised moon phase prints. The moon over the night that matters, rendered from NASA imagery of the real lunar surface.

One date, one moon

Every night has its own moon.

A birth, a first kiss, the night someone came home. The moon was there, in one exact shape. A moon phase print brings that shape back, so the date has something you can look at.

Real lunar surface

Rendered from NASA imagery.

The surface on your print comes from NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio, rendered from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter photographs and elevation data. The craters are real craters. The shadows along the edge are real terrain.

Calculated, not chosen

Lit as it was.

We calculate the phase for your date and time, down to how much of the moon the sun was lighting, then match it to one of 64 NASA renders of a full lunar cycle.

64renders across one lunar month, one for about every 11 hours

Where you stood

Turned to your sky.

The moon tilts as it crosses the sky, and from Sydney it hangs upside down compared with Dublin. We turn your moon to the angle it had from your place, at your time.

To keep

Made to be kept.

Printed on heavyweight fine-art paper or cotton-blend canvas, in deep Midnight blue or gallery Ink black, with your words beneath the moon: a title, a message, the place, the date and its coordinates.

Poster · Canvas · Framedportrait or square

Questions

Moon phase prints, explained.

What is a moon phase print?

A personalised print of the moon as it looked on a date you choose: its phase, how much of it was lit, and the angle it sat at from your place. Beneath it go your title, a message, the place, the date and its coordinates.

Is the moon on my print a real image?

Yes. The lunar surface comes from NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio, which rendered the moon from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter imagery and elevation data. The craters, seas and shadows are real terrain, not an illustration. NASA does not endorse Starrymaps or its products.

How accurate is it?

The phase and the share of the moon that was lit are calculated for the moment you choose, and the moon is turned to the angle it had from your place. The surface comes from 64 NASA renders of one 2026 lunar cycle, so the slight monthly wobble of the moon (libration) is not specific to your date. Your print uses the render closest to your moment’s phase, so its lit edge can differ from it by a few hours of the moon’s motion.

Does the time of day matter?

Yes, a little. The phase changes slowly, but the angle of the moon in your sky changes through the night. If you know the time, enter it; otherwise we use the time already set in the designer.

What if it was a new moon?

Then your print shows a new moon: its dark face, faintly lit by sunlight reflected off the Earth (earthshine). We draw that glow from NASA’s full-moon surface, so the seas and highlands still show.

What if the moon was not up that night, or it was cloudy?

The print still shows the moon’s phase for that moment, as you would have seen it once it rose or the clouds cleared. Phases are the same from everywhere on Earth; only the angle changes with your place.

Which dates can I choose?

Any date from 1900 to 2100, past or future, so it works for anniversaries and for dates still to come.

Which formats and colours are there?

Poster, framed print and canvas, plus a digital download. Every print comes in Midnight (deep blue with warm lunar ivory) or Ink (gallery black with silver details), in portrait or square.

Can I see it before I order?

Yes. The designer shows your moon as you set the date, the place and your words, and nothing is printed until you order.
